PROCEDURE FOR IMPORTING A VEHICLE IN GUYANA
- Total Revenue Integrated Processing System(TRIPS) holds the entries of all the motor vehicles which is done at the Entry Processing Unit(EPU).
- Cancellation of registration is required for the import of reconditioned motor vehicles from the seller of the vehicle. However, cancellation of registration is not required for the import of new cars.
- Verification of the entry of the vehicle is assessed by an Assessing Officer to ensure that the applicable taxes and Customs duties are implied on the import of vehicles from Japan.
- After the entry is uplifted from the Lodgement Counter, the importer of the vehicle or the broker must pay all the applicable duties and taxes to the GRA cashier.
- The vehicle can now be uplifted from the wharf by the importer or broker after the payment is done.
TAXATION
The duties and taxes implied on the import of vehicles from Japan are calculated on the basis of the age of the vehicle and the size of its engine. Duties imposed also depend on the Cost and Freight(CNF) price of the vehicle.
DUTIES IMPOSED ON MOTOR VEHICLES THAT ARE ABOVE 4 YEARS OF AGE
- For 0-1000cc engine: Custom Duty of 10%, US $4200 as Excise Tax
- For 1000-1500cc engine: Custom Duty of 10%, US $4200 as Excise Tax
- For 1500-1800cc engine: Custom Duty of 30%, US $6000 as Excise Tax
- For 1800-2000cc engine: Custom Duty of 30%, US $6500 as Excise Tax
- For 2000-3000cc engine: Custom Duty of 70%, US $13500 as Excise Tax
- For more than 3000cc engine: Custom Duty of 100%, US $14500 as Excise Tax
DUTIES IMPOSED ON MOTOR VEHICLES THAT ARE BELOW 4 YEARS OF AGE
- For 0-1500cc engine: Custom Duty of 45%, 14% VAT
- For 1500-1800cc engine: Custom Duty of 45%, 10% Excise Tax, 14% VAT
- For 1800-2000cc engine: Custom Duty of 45%, 10% Excise Tax, 14% VAT
- For 2000-3000cc engine: Custom Duty of 45%, 110% Excise Tax, 14% VAT
- For more than 3000cc engine: Custom Duty of 45%, 140% Excise Tax, 14% VAT
DUTIES IMPOSED ON IMPORT OF PRIVATE VEHICLES
- 150% Custom Duty, 16% VAT, 10-110% Excise Tax
- Custom Duty is dependent on the cc or engine weight and ranges from $4200-$6200.

- 150% Custom Duty, 16% VAT, 10-110% Excise Tax
- Custom Duty is dependent on the cc or engine weight and starts from $13500.
IMPORT REGULATIONS VEHICLES WITH USED TYRES
As per GRA, the import of the used cars from Japan is allowed only if the tires of the vehicle are brand new. If the used Japanese vehicle to be imported has used tires, then only if the tires have a depth of 6mm or more, the vehicle is allowed to enter.
